County Library Appeal Hits $40,000 Mark

Total donations to the “Your Library…the Vital Piece” Annual Appeal of Franklin County Library System during 2006 have cleared $40,000 of a $60,000 goal.  Approximately another $10,000 is pledged by December 1.  749 individuals and businesses have already given, but more are needed to meet the goal on time.

“The generosity of community members is amazing, and we thank each and every donor,” says Executive Director Bernice Crouse.  Gifts range in amount from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars.  Of the $40,000 received so far, only $20,000 goes to the general fund to pay for staff, materials, and building operations.  The rest has been earmarked by donors for individual libraries, and thus is used for their special projects.  The libraries receiving the largest amounts of designated Annual Appeal funding so far are Grove Family and Coyle Free Libraries, at almost $7,000 each.

Local public library funding comes from a variety of sources, the largest two by far of which are county and state tax revenue.  Other significant dependable sources include municipal and school district funds, dependent on the area of the county each library serves.  Then there are the revenues raised inside the libraries from rentals, fines, fees, and sales of small items to library customers.  Usually, the libraries receive at least one federal grant for materials or services per year, but since the LSTA grant program is competitive, those funds are not dependable in the budgeting process.

Beyond that library services depend on the generosity of community residents and businesses.  Each year the library system uses approximately $42,000 in monetary gifts and donations to meet general operating costs.  The Annual Appeal makes up the greatest portion of those donations to the general fund.

Donations of every size are important to the success of this annual endeavor.  Library supporters may continue to give to the appeal until December 1, 2006.  2006 will be a banner year if the $60,000 goal is reached by Thanksgiving.  Each dollar is needed to meet the annual operations budget of local library.  Undesignated gifts are the most beneficial to all libraries at this point in the appeal.

Designating funds for a favorite library does not help it pay the rent or keep your favorite staff members behind the desk.

Annual Appeal response cards and letters are available at the desk of all local participating libraries.  Everyone still has time to become a piece of the funding puzzle.  Bernice Crouse is available to speak about a variety of library topics at community events.  She may be reached at bdcrouse@fclspa.org or 709-0282 x212 to schedule a presentation, or for more information on the appeal.
